Police Intercept 12 Tonnes of Smuggled Mealie Meal

Police in North Western Province have intercepted about 12, 500 kilograms of smuggled maize meal.

Solwezi police confirmed that they intercepted a Fiso fighter truck with an Angolan plate number carrying over 500 by 25 kilogramme bags of mealie-meal destined for Kipushi boarder on Saturday.

North Western police commissioner Eugene Sibote said police had since arrested two men identified as Owen Sikapila of Kyawama compound in Solwezi who was driving the truck and Clefat Nzumbu of Chingola’s Chiwempala area and charged them with being in possession of property believed to be unlawfully obtained or stolen as they had no documents.

“The bags were concealed like they were carrying cobalt because there motive was for them to make the police think maybe it’s just those minerals from the mines but we managed to stop this syndicate.”

He said the culprits had confirmed that they wanted to take the mealie-meal to Congo DR thorough Kipushi border.
