Defence minister Geoffrey Mwamba has said he has deployed soldiers along the Zambian borders to stop the smuggling of maize and mealie meal.
Mwamba, who owns a milling company named after him, said the decision to send soldiers in border areas is meant to assist other security personnel who have already been stationed there to intensify the operations.
He said the smuggling of maize and mealie meal has become rife thereby affecting the food situation in the country.
For sometime now, government has been avoiding to take responsibility in managing the agriculture sector by shifting the blame on small scale traders who allegedly export the commodity to neighbouring countries.
On Friday, agriculture minister Bob Sichinga announced the ban on the export of maize. The Millers Association of Zambia has since welcomed the move and hope to stabilize the food situation in the country.
