The Jesuit Centre for Theological Reflections (JCTR) has advised government to channel more funds towards social protection in an effort to eradicate poverty.
JCTR Director Father Leonard Chiti has told QFM NEWS that increasing the direct social cash transfer will help alleviate hardships and also reduce poverty in the country.
Fr Chiti explains that the direct social cash transfer was currently Kr40 per household which is not sufficient for a household to have food on its table.
He also notes that the direct social cash transfer coverage is low and should be extended to all parts of the country stating that poverty is everywhere.
Fr Chiti has however commended government for the current increases in workers’ wages saying this will also help in reducing poverty.
He has urged Zambians to get actively involved in eradicating poverty by paying attention to the needy through giving alms to the old and sick.
