National team assistant coach Patrice Beaumelle says the 2-0 win over Zimbabwe was a befitting memory to the 1993 Gabon air disaster victims.
And Zimbabwe coach Diters Pagel said his team were second best as they were a hurriedly assembled squad.
In a post match interview after Zambia beat Zambia 2-0 in match organised to commemorate the 1993 Gabon disaster Beaumelle said the game showed that Zambia had a lot of talent.
“Today is a special day because it is a memory for our brothers who died in a plane crash it shows that they are special in our hearts,” he said.
“The win today was very special. We showed that for our local players there is a lot of potential.”
He added: “It is more than two months work to travel in all the provinces, we saw more than 500 players and today the results are here. It is the best for the young boys they have shown they can push for the Chipolopolo team.”
And the Zimbabwean coach said he was still building a team.
“We only had two days of preparations for this match, some of the players did not know each other before and for this I am really happy for their performance,” Pagels said.
“We have to select players when I went on the internet I found that Zambia had a tournament where they selected 162 players then I think it is very different from Zimbabwe we only had these players on the list and then we came together for two days for training not long.”
Two Bonwell Mwape strikes proved the difference as Zambia got its first win on the international scene since August last year when they beat Zimbabwe 1-0 at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium.
