Clik here to view.Seventeen (17) people have died on the spot after a Toyota Hiace minibus they were traveling in from Kabwe to Lusaka had a tyre burst and in the process lost control and hit into a truck before overturning several times at a radius of about 500 metres.
Road Transport and Safety Agency Principal Publicity officer Mercy Mwila has confirmed the accident happened around 06:30 hours this morning.
Mwila says four of the accident victims have been critically injured.
She adds that the accident happened near Ibis Gardens in Chisamba, and that RATSA preliminary investigations have established that the accident was caused by a tyre burst on the minibus.
Mwila says the minibus’s fleet number is KBE 559 while the truck’s registration number is AAF 8926 and trailer No.6767T.
And Police Spokesperson Elizabeth Kanjela says the driver of the minibus only identified as Costa is among the dead, while the driver of the Volvo truck belonging to SABOC transport of Zimbabwe Nathan Kambauwa aged 40 of Harare escaped unhurt.
Ms Kanjela says the deceased persons comprising of eight males and eight females have not been identified and that their bodies are lying in Liteta hospital mortuary, while the injured are admitted to the University Teaching Hospital.
In February 51 people died after a Post bus they were traveling in from Ndola to Lusaka collided with a truck in Chibombo.
