Police in Choma today fought running battles with taxi drivers when word went round that some suspects, believed to have killed one of their colleagues, had been apprehended. The officers, however, ran out of fuel and were only rescued by the municipal council to manage quell the situation.
The stone-throwing taxi drivers brought business to a standstill in the southern provincial capital, when they took to the streets, threatening to burn down all grocery shops claiming that it was the shop owners who were practicing ritual murders in the Districts in order to enhance their businesses.
Police had to seek the assistance of the local authority after running out of fuel in the process of trying to contain the situation.
Choma municipal council had to come to the rescue of the Police by providing more than 100 litres of fuel, which enabled the Police to bring the situation under control.
This is according to information made available to QFM News by Choma municipal council assistant public relations Manager Robert Zawe.
