Civil society organization Caritas Zambia says it is considering withdrawing its members from participating in by-elections as it has proved a huge drain on public resources.
Caritas, a Catholic sponsored CSO, says it was irresponsible for the Patriotic Front government to continue spending money on by-elections while the majority of Zambians were going hungry.
Caritas has written to all its members across the country to offer views on the matter.
The PF government has set out to wipe out the opposition by targetting a record over 50
by-elections in the country.
The move had received presidential approval with President Michael Sata saying the complaint against by-elections was idle and trivial.
“Our constitution is clear on the circumstances and procedures under which parliamentary or local government by-elections are permissible. And all registered political parties are at liberty to exercise their constitutional right to participate in any subsequent contest that might arise,” President Sata said in a statement by George Chellah – his press aide.
