Civil Society Organizations says it is shocking that Zambia will not meet the Millenium Development Goals despite have raised so much dust about the 2015 target.
Finance Minister Alexander Chikwanda said it would not be possible for Zambia to meet the 2015 Millenium Development Goals that among other targets hope to eliminate extreme hunger, access to clean drinking water and universal free primary education for the general citizenry.
Jesuit Centre for Thelogical Reflections Director Father Leonard Chiti notes that it is saddening the even attainable goals like providing universal primary education would not be met.
“We are very saddened by that revelation that comes at a time when there has been a lot said about the MDGs. I do not understand why Zambia can fail to meet the goal for universal primary education,” he said.
“We should not be talking about these things now so the minister’s statement is shocking.”
And Non Governmental Coordinating Council (NGOCC) Board Chaiperson Beatrice Grillo expressed shock that the country had fallen short of meeting the agenda that has been on many Zambians’ minds for a long time.
The admission could pierce the confidence in a government that had sailed to power on a platform of providing basic needs for the majority suffering Zambians.
Recent price increases in fuel, mealie meal and bus fares are part of an emerging trend that has gripped the country.
