Opposition United Party for National Development (UPND) says it will be petition the recent Kapiri parliamentary by-election.

Party legal counsel Martha Mushipe said the party had decided to petition the Kapiri Mposhi by-election owing to a high number of irregularities cited after reviewing evidence gathered.

PF candidate Eddie Musonda polled 6, 614 votes against his closest rival of the opposition UPND, Lawrence Zimba who got 5,470 votes while UNIP’s Francis Mwape managed a paltry 443 votes.

Mushipe said there were clear cases of breach of rules during the election as an official tasked to watch over ballot papers inexplicably left the door open and could not offer a satisfactory reason.

“We have been reviewing evidence and we have come to the conclusion there is more than enough evidence to petition the election of Christopher Musonda,” she said.

“We had cases of that officer who left the ballot papers unattended and then there was a case of two people who were convicted for election malpractice.”

During the Kapiri Mposhi by-election a lot of dust was raised with chiefs having been at the centre of controversy for publicly endorse candidates and directing subjects to follow their choice.
