President Michael Sata openly bullied State Counsels that they will have their titles withdrawn if they opted to criticize government.
The President was speaking when he conferred the status of State Counsel on his long PF lawyer Robert Simeza and moved to entrench the Nchito dynasty by honouring yet another of the brothers Nchima to the rank of State Counsel.
Another of the Nchito brothers Mutembo is overseeing the criminal justice system in the country as Director of Public Prosecution.
Sata said State Counsels should volunteer advice to the state or risk being stripped of that rank.
“A State Counsel is supposed to volunteer advice to the state but it is something else which we are seeing in Zambia, instead of advising the state they will criticize the state,” Sata warned in a move see as an attempt to intimidate the lawyers.
“The same way we confer it on you, we will remove it you know it is very embarrassing,” he said.
Traditionally State Counsels have rendered advice but is has gone unheeded leaving irrelevant to the general governance system.
The Law Association of Zambia had on Thursday issued guidelines on the procedure for assuming the status of State Counsel.
