ECZ1The Electoral Commission of Zambia has set Thursday July 25 as the date for four impending by-elections to be held in Chipata Central, Mkushi, Kafulafuta and Solwezi East.

ECZ Public Relations Officer Chris Akufuna said the ballot papers for the polls will once again be printed in the United Kingdom.

Akufuna said the campaign period would open on June 27 and close on July 24 on the eve of the election.

With the exception of the Chipata Central by-election that was as a result of a Supreme Court nullification, the rest were caused by Members of Parliament enticed to defect to the ruling Patriotic Front by President Michael Sata where all the defectors have so far been appointed deputy ministers on retaining their seats.

Zambians are protesting against the wasteful by-elections which many say could save government. They argue that instead of wasting money on by-elections which has prompted removal of subsidies on fuel and maize, President Sata can act responsibility to service the poor.

Today, UNZA students ran battles with police with over 30 reportedly arrested for protesting the harsh economic conditions imposed by the PF government through removal of subsidies that has triggered rise in cost of living.
