Edgar LunguHome Affairs minister Edgar Lungu has confirmed government ordered the blocking of Fourth Republican President Rupiah Banda from travelling to South Africa after being invited by the Boston Institute.

Addressing a hurriedly arranged press briefing today Lungu said the security wings had information that Banda would use the trip to tamper with evidence.

He said allowing Banda to travel would be prejudicial to ongoing investigations.

He said the officers defied the court order because Banda could be called upon by the security wings at any time.

“As for the embargo on Mr Banda’s travel the security wings like the Anti Corruption Commission, Drug Enforcement Commission and and immigration they fear that he will tamper with evidence in cases where he is being charged pursued,” Lungu said.

“The officers acted on information that they had so they defied the court order.”

Banda was this morning barred from boarding the plane at Kenneth Kaunda International Airport by immigration officers who said they were acting instructions from higher authorities.
High Court judge Jane Kabuka had on Wednesday ordered the release of Banda’s passport to allow his to travel to South Africa.
