United Party for National Development president Hakainde Hichilema congratulated the Patriotic Front for scooping the Feira constituency by-election.
PF candidate Patrick Ngoma won the elections that he had previously held under the MMD ticket.
“I congratulate the PF through Patrick Ngoma on their victory in Feira. The supporters and their campaign team also deserve congratulations.
“I wish all of them well. This is a time of great challenges for Zambia and particularly Feira. I pray that the MP will be successful in guiding the constituency on the path to success and development,” he said.
Hichilema also thanked his campaign team led by vice president Dr Canisius Banda for doing their best as well as the people of Feira that braved the cold weather to give UPND something to smile about.
He said the people of Feira have confirmed that UPND is the largest opposition party in Zambia.
“Let me take this opportunity to also thank all those that have volunteered and continue volunteering their resources to the UPND, be it time, finances, advise, and various other forms of support even moral support.
“I would like to thank you very much and urge you to continue with that spirit for the sake of UPND and democracy in the country. Thanks for all the hours of work, for the calls, for the speeches and appearances, for the resources and for the prayers. You gave deeply from yourselves and performed magnificently, and you inspired us and you humbled us. You’ve been the very best we could have imagined.”
Hichilema said Zambia is at a critical point where it cannot risk partisan bickering and political posturing.
He said the national leaders need to reach across party barriers and do the people’s work.
“And we citizens also have to rise to the occasion. Let us prevail on all those that win and lose elections to continue with the leadership that they promised before and after. There is no point in offering oneself to lead but end up only showing up during elections,” Hichilema said.
He also praised the party’s losing candidate Eularia Zulu as a woman of substance and intellect.
Hichilema said leadership is not just about being a member of parliament but about role modelling to young people.
