Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly Mkhondo Lungu has directed Health Minister Joseph Kasonde to present a ministerial statement to Parliament on the reported importation of beef products by Zambeef containing harmful chemicals.
Lungu made the ruling in Parliament this morning following a point of order raised by Monze central Member of Parliament Jack Mwiimbu whether government was in order to remain quite on the matter without informing the house what measures they are taking to safeguard the lives of the Zambian people.
Mwiimbu said there is no guarantee that the purported contaminated beef products have been withdrawn from various Zambeef outlets in the country.
He adds that the Zambian people want to know what immediate measures government is taking to ensure that their lives are protected.
Zambeef imports beef products, which mainly include hooves, livers, tripe for sale to Zambians in its many outlets dotted around the country.
Health Minister Joseph Kasonde has revealed that tests carried on imported ZAMBEEF beef products have confirmed the presence of chemicals which are also used to embalm bodies.
