It all started in 1996, one Christopher Chawinga (rip), broke into this chorus “Kaunda alala” soon after the current constitution was accented to by Fredrick Chiluba (rip).
For some of us who had been longer on the bloke knew that even though Chiluba said these words during the press conference “This constitution was not designed to target one individual…….”, we knew it was targeted at Kaunda. The constitution was passed by a 2/3 majority because MMD had a majority.
We have heard the debate starting for 8 year Presidential terms as reported in the Daily Nation. We are not surprised, after all the current President was at the helm of the MMD in 1998 when the third term debate started. Why do people think that the PF is rushing to cause by elections? They want a majority parliament (rubber stamp).
What is the essence of having 8 year terms? What is the motivation other than just for selfish reasons. Let us tell you how the PF will put anything they want in the constitution if we do not rise up and protect ourselves.
The PF will continue causing by elections, until they get the 2/3 majority, legitimately or not is of no consequence to them. Then they will start off telling you that instead of spending money on a referendum to adopt a document that will have all these things in it, they will take it to parliament (rubber stamp).
We can assure you that (i) we will not allow PF get a 2/3 majority. (ii) we shall push for a people driven constitution, even if it means driving on pot holes, we are ready to do so if only for us to stop these constitutions manipulated by those in power.
We have wasted enough time on this document and every time the processes yield nothing. We had promised a 100 days constitution, and we challenge you to find anything new in the draft that has not been talked about in the previous two reviews.
We stopped the third term to Sata and Chiluba’s chagrin, what will stop us from stopping this ludicrous endeavour.
For us, we hope that Zambians have learnt a lesson, when something is too good to be true, it probably is too good to be true. This is an experiment of Governance, let us learn from this experiment.
