sata fuelA critical fuel shortage has hit Solwezi in the North Western Province with the less than five filling stations running out of the commodity.

Most of the filling stations in the province were initially rationing the commodity and only selling to some of their strategic clients while the ordinary buyer is stranded.

Motorists had formed long queues as early as 5 a.m at Mount Melu, Total and SGC filling station which by 12:00 hours did not have the commodity and there was no word when it was expected.

The only filling station that received fuel by 12:00 hours was Puma filling station but up to about midday the commodity is not selling and motorists are flocking to the station in numbers.

It is anticipated that the fuel at Puma will run out within a few hours after the filling station management start selling the commodity.

President Michael Sata’s Patriotic Front government is running a chaotic fuel management system with periodic shortages hitting the country. While in opposition, President Sata was a strong critic of fuel shortages and promised an end to them when two such incidents emerged.

The now Head of State would even appear at filling stations with a container to win sympathy from motorists pretending that he was looking for fuel and was equally stranded.

Recently, the PF government removed subsidies on fuel claiming they wanted to help the poor people with the money saved. There is also a shortage of kerosine in the country.
