evelyn-hone-college-zambia-reportsOver 70 Evelyn Hone College students have been arrested by police following a riot over government’s withdrawal of bursaries and also the union’s allegedly selling out to the Patriotic Front government.

Evelyn Hone Coallege spokesperson Mwelwa Mandona said the students had burnt six classrooms.

The students mobilized themselves around 03:00 hours but police came heavily on the students teargassing them and beating them up.

A fragile peace has returned to campus as the union is still negotiating their release.

Some eyewitness say the trail of destruction experienced at the institution is the first in over decade as no such property has been lost in protests since 2001.

The students were set to also torch a filling station opposition the college but the action by police brought the situation under minimum control as some of the ring leaders were arrested.

Mandona says management is saddened by the conduct of the students not to engage management before resorting to rioting.

He adds that it is unfortunate that the students have resolved to damage classrooms and wonders where they will be learning from.

Mandona has also revealed that the students have destroyed other private property including the street lights along Church Road near Central Police.

And Evelyn Hone College Students Union (EHCOSU) Secretary General, Beatrice Kawanga has said the arrested students are detained at Lusaka Central Police and the union leadership is still negotiating for their release.

Kawanga says the riot begun around 03hrs this morning up to around 04:30hrs.

She adds that the students are demanding improved sanitary conditions at the institution among others things.
