Official: MMD’s Mtolo Phiri Wins Chipata Central

Mtolo PhiriThe Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) has officially declared the Movement for Multi-Party Democracy (MMD)’s candidate for Chipata Central Rueben Mtolo Phiri the winner of Thursday’s by-election in Eastern Province.

Official results for three other by-elections held Thursday in Solwezi East, Kafulafuta and Mkushi North are still being awaited although preliminary polls show opposition United Party for National Development (UPND) in strong command of the former with the ruling PF almost confirmed winners in Mkushi North.

According to final results announced shortly after midnight, Phiri, whose 2011 victory was nullified by the Supreme Court on account of mal-practice convincingly defeated the PF’s Lameck Mangani.

Phiri polled 8186 while Mangani managed 5913 representing a difference of 2273 votes with the United National Independence Party candidate Elina Nyirenda polling 462 as the National Restoration Party candidate secure 91 in an election that had 113 rejected votes.

MMD president Nevers Mumba has majority of his top leadership that included treasurer Mwansa Mbulakulima, Howard Kunda, Vincent Mwale were camped for long spells of the election period in Chipata and make sure the former ruling party retained the seat.

In the picture, Phiri celebrated the victorious announcement and is joined by Dr Mumba, Mbulakulima and MMD supporters.
