There is a deliberate campaign to discredit the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) in an effort to hound out its leadership by the Patriotic Front (PF) government, Civil Rights Activist Brebner Changala has revealed.
Changala said that the cancellation of the nominations in three constituencies yesterday had revealed concerns in the manner the PF leadership and its minions were trying to discredit the ECZ and in turn disband it.
He said this was a highly calculated move by the ruling party and its cronies who had realised that the days and fortunes of the PF had run out.
Changala charged that the PF had cheated themselves into power through lies and innuendos which Zambian could no longer buy.
Because of this he said, the ruling party had now resorted to attacking and under mining the Commission and opposition political candidates to justify their criminal intentions in salvaging PF from the doldrums.
“For how else can one explain the screaming headlines in the media which were intentionally misleading in nature and lacking judicial authority but fully loaded with malice and misinformation? This is very dangerous and my question to my fellow citizens is what type of Zambia are we building for ourselves and our children?
“I realise there is too much hate speech and hatred being marketed by our media houses that are pro government. This must stop. How can a public relations officer nullify elections and bar candidates to file in nominations? Where does he draw his authority? Are you telling us that the media houses could not properly interpret the press statement released by the judiciary? Was it done deliberately to mislead the people of Zambia and if so, where the credibility of these media is houses if there is any?” he questioned.
The civil rights activist said that he was very disappointed by the conduct of his Church (Catholic Church) which campaigned very vigorously for President Michael Sata and the PF prior to the 2011 elections.
He said the Church was blazing with fire to denounce the former ruling party and Rupiah Banda alleging that they were not serving the interests of the poor and the voiceless.
“Now we have jumped from the frying pan into the fire and my Church and its Bishops have conveniently gone into hiding for their role in bringing misery and agony to the people of Zambia.
“My appeal to both the Church and the media houses that have chosen to eat with the oppressors thereby abandoning God’s children is that their time of reckoning is coming and coming soon,” Changala said.
He commended Judge Ireen Mambilia the ECZ chairperson for standing up against all the evils that were being perpetrated by the PF government and its allies.
“To her I say you are not alone the entire Zambia is with you and for you. Please stand for us one more time against these evil doers,” he said.
