Patriotic Front cadres in Northern Province in Kasama have beaten up a UPND entourage led by Party President Hakainde Hichilema who were on their way to pay a courtesy call on Paramount Chief Chitimukulu.
Party vice president Canicius Banda said the PF cadres wielding weapons among them pangas, knives and axes waylaid the UPND leader and descended on his entourage.
“Mr Hakainde Hichilema, the President of the United Party for National Development (UPND), the leading opposition political party in Zambia, was this morning waylaid, stoned and whipped by the ruling party’s (the Patriotic Front) cadres as he neared Paramount Chief Chitimukulu’s palace,” Banda said via his social media facebook wall.
“Mr Hichilema had an appointment with Paramount Chief Chitimukulu. Out of respect for traditional authority and as an act of endorsement for the Chitimukulu’s enthronement, Mr Hichilema had deemed it important to pay a courtesy call on the Paramount Chief.”
Banda said the incident reflected the President’s statement that the intelligence system had infiltrated the UPND leader.
“This incident follows revelations by the Republican President Mr Michael Sata that his intelligence system had infiltrated Mr Hichilema and the UPND. This again typefies the breakdown of rule of law and disappearance of citiziens’ freedom in Zambia,” he said.
On Monday President Sata through his mouthpiece George Chellah said the intelligence had done an excellent job to infiltrate the UPND leader.
