The Civil Society Coalition on the Constitution says Zambia looks set to have a Patriotic Front Constitution after the announcement that the public will not have the opportunity to scrutinize the final document.
Coalition spokesperson Father Leornard Chiti said the Patriotic Front just those before them had fallen into the trap of self preservation where the constitution is concerned.
He appealed to the PF to rescind its decision and deliver on a people driven constitution.
“The reports we are getting that they have made a u-turn on the earlier position to simultaneously release the final draft constitution to the president and the public.
“For a long time the public fearing past experiences have been against the lack of the opportunity to scrutiny the document because they have been short changed before,” Fr Chiti said.
“Remember that former President Chiluba threw out more than 80 percent of the recommendations after so much money had been spent on the process. We demand that the technical committee rescinds its decision and respects the wishes of the people.”
The Technical Committee on the Constitution announced recently that they would not give the public an opportunity to scrutinize the final draft constitution as earlier planned but will only hand it over to the President.
