PF-CadresRelatives of a Patriotic Front cadre murdered in the fracas last week Thursday have exhumed the body of Moses Simuwela to conduct their own postmortem.

This follows the decision by police to hurriedly bury Simuwela after doctors at UTH said he had died of natural causes.

The PF aligned Post Newspaper reported yesterday that there was confusion at UTH mortuary on Tuesday when police officers whisked away the body of Moses Simuwela, who died during an intra-party clash last week, for burial following a dispute on a postmortem report.

Confusion ensued after results of the postmortem revealed that Simuwela died of natural causes.

This incensed relatives who refused to bury the body until the ‘truth’ of the cause of death was established.

According to sources that witnessed the postmortem, police were forced to remove the body and forced their way out of the mortuary.

“The doctor did the postmortem and the results were that he (Simuwela) died of natural causes and this angered the family. They wondered, ‘what natural causes because he had cuts on his body, injuries were seen’. The family refused to bury and the body was rushed to Leopard’s for burial where we found some family members waiting and after explaining, we buried,” said the source.

Police spokesperson Charity Chanda referred all queries to the University Teaching Hospital public relations office but public relations officer Mwenya Mulenga said: “That’s a police case. I am in Chongwe, that guy died from Levy (Mwanawasa general hospital) not UTH; postmortem is a police case.”

The independent postmortem demanded by relatives is currently underway.
