PigsAgriculture Minister Bob Sichinga say 25,000 pigs in Lusaka Province will be slaughtered to contain the outbreak of African swine fever.

On Sunday the Ministry of Agriculture announced the outbreak of the African swine fever in Lusaka with government banning the movement of pigs from outside Lusaka.

Government has banned the movement and marketing of pigs in the province and has directed pork processing plants to immediately stop processing the commodity.

“From the emerging picture, it is estimated that 11,000 pigs are on African swine fever affected farms. Additionally, there are 14,000 pigs on farms neighbouring the affected farms which are in danger of contracting the disease.

“Therefore, our only recourse is to slaughter all pigs on both affected and in-contact farms to ensure that the disease is contained,” Sichinga said.
