A 41 year–old Tanzanian national has died at Nakonde border in Muchinga province after allegedly swallowing 75 pellets of cocaine.
Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) Public Relations Officer Theresa Katongo has confirmed the development in a press statement released to the Zambia News and Information Services (ZANIS) in Chinsali today.
Katongo said the deceased who has been identified as Saidi Mwishehe Maya was coming from Morogoro, Tanzania when he collapsed at Nakonde bus stop and was rushed to Nakonde first level referral health centre where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Katongo said the post-mortem carried out on Maya has revealed that one of the 75 pellets of cocaine burst in his stomach national thereby causing severe intoxication by the drug.
Katongo said that the Tanzanian national was about to board a Lusaka bound bus en route to South Africa when he met his fate.
The DEC Public Relations Officer has since warned that the Commission would like to caution members of the public to be alert and desist from being used as drug couriers as the vice can lead to serious health implications including death.
