Clik here to view. The Prison Care Association says the dismissal of 18 state advocates by the Ministry of Justice for demanding for the non practice allowance was unfortunate.
State Advocates were demanding K3,600 non practicing allowance which is said to have been abolished but the Ministry of Justice reacted by firing them.
PRISCA Executive Director Godfrey Malembeka said the reduced number of State Advocates will reduce the chance of representation for inmates who rely on legal aid.
“There are over 5, 000 remandees and most of these cannot afford a lawyer and rely on legal aid and with this development these people are going to lose their only chance of having legal representation,” Malembeka said.
“We would like to urge to government to rethink their action and reinstate these advocates.”
