zctu-mwaba-zambia-reportsThe Zambia Congress of Trade Unions has advised President Michael Sata not to rule the country by an iron fist by wiping out any form of dissent in the country.

During a press briefing held at Lusaka Hotel, ZCTU General Secretary Roy Mwaba said it would not add value to the Patriotic Front government to dismiss nurses for going on strike after they were promised better wages by the government unsolicited for.

“We would like to advise the government not to rule by the iron fist, I repeat we would like to warn the PF government not to rule by iron fist to crush whoever stands up to claim their rights,” Mwaba said.

“They should know that it is not by might but by grace that they will be respected. Whoever advised the President made a very grave technical mistake.”

He said: “A few days before the nurses were fired government acknowledged that the grievances of the nurses were genuine and that government was looking at ways to address them. So it means the challenges are genuine.”

Government has fired over 200 nurses for going on strike demanding a 100 percent pay rise and the rectifying of the disparities in the pay structure.
