Police in Western Province fired shots in the air and teargas to disperse the crowd that had turned up to welcome former Ngambela Clement Sinyinda from prison where he was discharged of treason charges.
Sympathizers had started trooping to Mongu Airport as early as 06:00 hours on Thursday but were met with a battalion of police officers who had cordoned off the airport area.
However, the scores of residents remained resolute and stayed within distance of the airport despite the police keeping them outside a 300 metres radius.
The residents went wild with celebrations as Sinyinda climbed down the plane as he was whisked away to his car.
Sinyinda spent four months in custody before government entered a nolle prosequi on November, 29 2013.
