MMD president Dr Nevers Mumba speaking at a media briefing in Lusaka. The opposition Movement for Multi Party Democracy says it will hold an extra ordinary executive meeting to decide the way forward over the continued nullification of their members’ seats by the Supreme Court.

Speaking in the wake of the nullification of the seventh seat for the former ruling party after Mkushi South parliamentarian Sydney Chisanga became the latest to have a seat nullified by the Supreme Court, MMD Deputy National Secretary Chembe Nyangu said democracy in Zambia was seriously under threat.

Last week outspoken Solwezi Central MP Lucky Mulusa had his seat nullified by the Supreme Court in what is seen as a scheme conceived by the ruling party in collusion with the Supreme Court to decimate numbers for the opposition in parliament.

“These nullifications are really getting out of hand and are detrimental to the democratic ideals that the country has long aspired for,” Nyangu said.

“We are going to meet and decide the way forward on the matter and will convene an extra ordinary meeting to decide on the way forward.”

Chisanga lost his seat after losing Patriotic Front candidate Davies Chisopa petitioned the seat.

Among the notable vocal MPs that have suffered similar fates are Dora Siliya, Maxwell Mwale, Eustackio Kazonga, Charles Kakoma and Mulusa.
