The opposition United Party for National Development says 2013 will be remembered as a year when democracy suffered several assaults from the executive.
UPND spokesperson Cornelius Mweetwa said there was a record number of nullified seats held by the Supreme Court targetted at opposition parties.
He said there was also an increase in the arrest of journalists on trumped up charges.
“2013 will be remembered as a year when democracy was under constant attack. We had so many numbers of seats held by the opposition that were nullified by the Supreme Court under very suspicious circumstances,” Mweetwa said.
“Zambia is being set on a path to a One party State by working to wipe out all opposition seats.”
Mweetwa said the constant search and arrest of journalists perceived to be anti PF was a sad chapter in the year 2013.
“We saw the search and arrest of journalists with the aim to implicate them and intimidate them. The overall picture of 2013 points to a fast deteriorating democratic system.”
Journalists Clayson Hamasaka, Thomas Zyambo and Wilson Mpondamali are facing fast changing charges that have been revised more than two times as the government remains undecided.
