FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
23rd December 2013
OFFICIAL CHRISTMAS MESSAGE
BY
HAKAINDE HICHILEMA
AT THE SERVICE OF THE POOR AND UNDERPRIVILEGED
Countrymen and country women. Christmas day is a very important day in the life of any Christian. Not only was our lord Jesus Christ born on this day, but it also acts as a very important point of reflection for a people who claim to be living in a Christian nation.
Ladies and gentlemen, this is the time to take stock of how we have lived our lives in the year 2013. The Christian doctrine demands of us to be humble, selfless, and above all loving and caring to and for each other. The questions we need to ask ourselves as we reflect are: – have we lived a humble life in 2013? Have we been selfless?
I am appealing to us, as we reflect, let us spend time with our families. The family is the foundation of any nation. This is why it is important for us to spend time with our families.
Let me make a passionate appeal to those that intend to celebrate to do so in moderation. We have a long way to go before everyone can celebrate Christmas. We are observing Christmas against a background of an increased cost of living. Prices of most commodities have gone up, the poor have become poorer, farmers have not been paid, and most of our people do not know where they will find money to pay schools fees in 2014. But this is the reality we find ourselves in, this Christmas. We can however forget about these problems momentarily and spend time with family and strategise on how we overcome these challenges henceforth.
Have a happy Christmas fellow countrymen and country women.
Thank you.
Hakainde Hichilema
President
UNITED PARTY FOR NATIONAL DEVELOPMENT
