Former Economics Association of Zambia president Noel Nkhoma says 2013 was a disaster from an agriculture perspective.
Nkhoma who is also former Finance Bank Executive Director said the mismanagement of the delivery of inputs and also the poor marketing system had led to high mealie meal prices and a reduced crop yield.
Currently the forecast for the 2014 season looks bleak with inputs yet to be delivered to some areas while some areas have received one of either fertilizer of basal dressing fertilizer.
“I can say 2013 season has been a disaster for agriculture because of the mismanagement in the delivery of inputs and the marketing season was a disaster,” Nkhoma said.
“Already the projection for next season shows a reduced crop yield statistics are pointing towards a decline in food security. Actually food security is under threat going into next year and the ever increasing prices should really point to hard times ahead.”
