Victoria FallsThe National Water Supply and Sanitation Council (NWASCO) has approved the tariff adjustments s for 2014 .

The adjustment is both upward and downward. It is not just and increment but it is also a decrease.

For instance, we have up to 56% decrease in the price of water in fourth block tariff for areas like Chirundu district, meaning the price has been reduced from Five kwacha, seventy ngwee (ZMW 5.70) to Two kwacha, fifty three ngwee (ZMW 2.53).

In Lusaka district for example, a 10% increase has been affected on the first block from Two kwacha, Fifty ngwee (ZMW 2.50) to Two kwacha, seventy five ngwee (ZMW 2.75) for One Thousand litres of water.

The interpretation is that the cost of one thousand litres of water (equivalent to about 5 drums) is still costing less than a single bottle of mineral water.

The adjustment is arrived at after wide consultations with various stake holders.

The increase has been necessitated in order to meet chemical costs, energy costs and other variables required to continue providing sustainable water and sanitation services.

“ It is an egg and chicken situation”. When the cost of doing business goes up, for Lusaka Water to continue giving a sustainable service we have to adjust our tariffs.
