Police in Lusaka this morning arrested six environmental activists who staged a peaceful protest outside Pamodzi Hotel where Vice President Guy Scott was meeting an Australian delegation led by that country’s mines minister.
The activists were airing their views on government’s decision to ignore advice from the Zambia Environmental Management Association not to allow mining in the lower Zambezi.
Government has given a go ahead to Zambezi Mineral Resources a company listed on the Australian Stock Exchange to conduct mining activities in the lower Zambezi.
The activists said the lower Zambezi is a heritage site that should not be defiled by mining activities.
Police broke up the protest and bundled the activists to Lusaka Central Police where they were released after interrogation.
