UPND Wins Chililabombwe Ward, Takes Early Katuba Lead

upnd-lusaka-zambia-reportsThe United Party for National Development (UPND) has scooped a local council ward in Chililabombwe, a region widely viewed a ruling party stronghold, and has taken an early lead in the Katuba by-election.

Reports indicate that the Patriotic Front has retained the Wusakile ward in Kitwe where they command strong presence but were given a good run by UPND.

In Chililabombwe, the UPND candidate Kelly Simukoko in Mvula Ward polled 139 votes in a closely contested that saw the PF finish second on 123 votes. The MMD had 37 while an Independent candidate got 33 with five rejected.

In Katuba, early counting shows the UPND candidate Jonas Shakafuswa is commanding authority in a number of polling station.

At Chunga Polling Station, UPND’s Shakafuswa has garnered 220 votes while PF’s Moses Chilando managed 75 with the MMD’s Cecil Homes in third place on 58. NAREP candidate got 18, ABZ 13, UNIP 12 and Cosmo Mumba’s had no vote.

At Kabangwe Polling Station, the UPND’s Shakafuswa managed UPND-247, PF Chilando was second on 134 with MMD’s Homes third on 14 votes.
