Political activist Dante Saunders has praised opposition Members of Parliament (MPs) for forcing today’s parliamentary session to adjourn after protesting for the enactment of the new constitution.
Speaking in Lusaka, Saunders said the MPs had shown the displeasure and anger of the people over the failure by the Patriotic Front (PF) to give them a new constitution.
“What the MPs did was very good and very commendable. Every right-thinking Zambian would do that and just protest for that which belongs to them,” he said.
During the sitting of Parliament, MPs heckled and mocked Justice Minister Wynter Kabimba’s presentation of the ministerial statement on the draft constitution. The MPs shouted: “‘Constitution! Constitution!,’ before Speaker of the National Assembly Patrick Matibini intervened and adjourned business for the day.”
But Saunders said the MPs were within their rights and merely representing the frustration of many Zambians.
He said president Sata and his PF government had shown blatant arrogance and disregard for respect over the people’s constitution.
“What happened in parliament is historical. It has never happened. We urge the MPs to continue with that trend until this government enacts a new constitution and begins to listen to the people who elected them,” he said.
Saunders said there was need for the government to release the constitution immediately because the matter could degenerate into chaos if not handled properly.
He said Zambians were not gullible to be abuse with impunity in the manner the PF was behaving.
There have been clarion calls from different sectors of Zambia, demanding for the release and enactment of the news constitution.
But president Sata has been refusing the release the constitution.
Recently, president Sata barred all ministers, civil servants and other government from discussing the draft constitution in public.
Sata also shocked people when he said that the people calling for a people-driven constitution must first submit to him “an animal-driven constitution.”
