Scores of youths from Lusaka townships are thronging cabinet offices where they are demanding for recommendation letters for employment in government institutions.

The young people are camped outside cabinet office where they want vice president Guy Scott to give them recommendation letters to be hired in government institutions.

Some youths are arriving as early as 05:00 hours in the morning to queue up for jobs.

Those interviewed said many youths with proven loyalty to the Patriotic Front (PF) were recently awarded recommendation letters to be employed in the defence force wings such as Zambia Air Force, Zambia Army and the Zambia Police.

“Recently, vice president Guy Scott’s office gave recommendation letters to some of our friends. Those who got the letters have been employed at ZESCO in different provinces. We also want jobs because this is what they promised us. We were told to see the minister of Defence Edgar Lungu and this is why we are here. There are a lot of us, including women,” James Zimba from Matero township said.

He said there is a secret recruitment exercise where the PF youths were being asked to collect recommendation letters from cabinet office to be employed in the various government institutions.

Another youth Bertha Ngandu said some youths who did not even have appropriate qualifications were being favoured instead of qualified people.

“There are some women here who are not even youths. They have basic grade 12 certificates and they are getting recommendation letters. They are being given jobs. We all belong to the PF. There must be fairness,” she said.

Ngandu said the office of the vice president was giving out the recommendation letters, but they have now been told to go to the ministry of defence.

Efforts to get a reaction from vice president Guy Scott failed by press time because he was testifying at the Tribunal of embattled Tourism and Arts minister Sylvia Masebo, while Defence minister Edgar Lungu was not available at his office and his mobile phone went unanswered.
