Human rights activist Brebner Changala says police need to be educated on their role in applying the Public Order Act.
Changala said it was unfortunate that the police had continued behaving as if they had the power to deny citizens their right to assembly.
“The police need to be sensitized on their role in enforcing the Public Order Act, they seem to have begun to think that they have a right to deny permission when all that is required is to notify them,” he said.
“They are abusing the rights of citizens and we appeal to the civil society to sensitize them and ensure that they behave like a 21st century law enforcement agency.”
The Zambia police who swarmed the National Assembly yesterday denied opposition UPND their right to hold a demonstration outside parliament today.
