Antonio MwanzaOpposition Forum for Democracy and Development says it is worrying that parliamentary seats that have been nullified by the courts of law have disadvantaged the electorates in those areas.

FDD spokesperson Antonio Mwanza said the nullification of seats should have been eased by an expeditious court process.

Mwanza said the situation had justified the need for a constitutional court that could have quickly dealt with the matters.

“We are concerned that the courts of law are taking too long to dispose off some of the cases for the nullified seats. We are aware that there are MPs who cannot go to court because their seats are still a subject of the court process,” he said.

“The situation tends to disadvantage the electorates in those areas as you know development at the grassroots in our situation depends on an MP. That is why during the constitution making process we demanded that there should be a constitutional court that would specifically deal with electoral matters to avoid such cases.”

While the constitution stipulates that an election should be held within 90 days of a seat falling vacant some seats like Petauke Central, Malambo and Mulobezi have dragged beyond that limit as the PF battles to eliminate the candidature of vocal incumbents Dora Siliya, Maxwell Mwale and the new comer Hastings Sililo.
