The grand coalition on the constitution has announced that it will hold countrywide demonstrations given President Michael Sata and government’s refusal to own up to its pre-election pledge to deliver a people driven constitution.

During a media briefing attended by among others, leaders of opposition political parties today, coalition spokesperson Judith Mulenga said the coalition members were prepared for police brutality.

Mulenga said they were ready to face arrests if the police or government went that route as they demand a people driven constitution.

She challenged the Technical Committee to show strength by freeing the draft constitution that has yet to be officially handed over to the President despite the committee having finished its work last year in November.

“We are going to hold countrywide demonstrations, we are prepared for the police beatings, we are prepared to be locked or whatever the police want to do to us,” she said.

“We will go ahead because we know we stand on the side of right.”

She challenged the Technical Committee to acquit themselves over the impasse as their silence gave the impression that they had something to hide.

“We demand that the Technical Committee immediately acquits itself of the responsibility given to them by the Zambian people by releasing the draft constitution,” he said.

Among the notable attendees of the press conference were MMD’s Nevers Mumba, UPND’s Hakainde Hichilema, Father Frank Bwalya (ABZ), Mike Mulongoti (PP) and Charles Milupi (ADD).

The grand coalition also vowed to engage the labour movement in their call for a people driven constitution.
