After months of paying a blind eye to the devastation caused by the dismissed nurses, government has finally budged and announced a general amnesty for the 594 fired health workers.
In December last year, government fired nurses who were demanding a cleanup of the disparities in the payroll and also a 100 percent promised salary increment.
However, after three months of playing hardball Health Minister Joseph Kasonde said the nurses have been allowed to re-apply and will be re-admitted unconditionally.
The situation in some health facilities especially the University Teaching Hospital has been dire as the largest referral centre is forever short of staff even before the nurses were dismissed.
Kasonde said 123 of the 594 dismissed nurses had already re-applied for their jobs.
