President Michael Sata has allegedly sacrificed former tourism minister Sylvia Masebo following what sources say will be damaging recommendations by a tribunal investigating the Chongwe MP’s professional misconduct.
Masebo has recently come under the spotlight for firing the Zambia Wildlife Authority (ZAWA) board against legal advise and cancelling duly awarded tenders.
William Harrington, a former minister in Frederick Chiluba’s government, mounted a tenacious legal challenge to bring Masebo to account.
Tribunal witnesses, except for the likes of Vice President Guy Scott and North Western Province permanent secretary Amos Malupenga, presented damaging testimonies against Masebo.
Intelligence officers, PF Kabwata lawmaker and Attorney General Mumba Malila all said it was wrong and illegal for Masebo to cancel the hunting licence tender as it was beyond her powers.
Experts from the Zambia Public Procurement Agency also supported the view that Masebo’s action was illegal.
Sources have disclosed that these testimonies have given rise to a strong report with damning recommendations against Masebo by the tribunal.
The sources say the recommendations had left Sata with no option but to fire Masebo who could be considered for other appointments if lucky but indications are that she will be prosecuted.
President Sata, fearing calls for his impeachment considering Masebo had implicated him, decided to act. The action is also a facesaver that will legitimise the decision of the Wynter Kabimba tribunal.
