FOUR bandits have allegedly stolen US$92,000 (about K570,000) from an employee of Lusaka’s Bullion Bureau de Change in the bustling border town of Nakonde.
But the police have detained the employee because of inconsistencies in his account of the incident.
Muchinga Province deputy commissioner of police Bonny Kapeso said from Chinsali yesterday that the incident is said to have happened on Wednesday around 06:00 hours in the central business district of Nakonde ,which borders Tanzania’s town of Tunduma.
Kapeso said the suspects allegedly waylaid Kelvin Mbewe, 31, of Mtendere East in Lusaka while he was taking the money to Bullion Bureau de Change branch in Nakonde.
“Mr Mbewe was allegedly attacked as he disembarked from a Lusaka-Nakonde bus at the station and he was in the process of taking the money to the Bullion Bureau de Change branch in Nakonde. We have not arrested anyone in connection with the robbery but investigations are underway,” Kapeso said.
He said Mbewe told police that the criminals initially tried to grab US$192,000 but he managed to recover US$100,000 after a struggle.
Kapeso said police have instituted investigations into the matter and they have detained Mbewe to help with investigations because there are some discrepancies in his account of the incident.
Meanwhile, police in Nakonde have arrested a 50-year-old man of Kaombwe village in Chief Kafwimbi’s area for allegedly having sex with a goat.
Muchinga Province deputy commissioner of police Bonny Kapeso said in an interview yesterday that the incident happened on Tuesday around 12:00 hours at Kaombwe village.
Kapeso identified the suspect as Charles Simukwayi.
“We have arrested Simukwayi of Chief Kafwimbi’s area in Nakonde district for having sex with a goat. He was caught red-handed with the goat by the owner of the animal who later reported to police,” Kapeso said.
He said the owner of the goat identified as Aaron Silwimba, 33, of the same village, allegedly caught Simukwayi having sex with the animal.
Kapeso said police have detained and charged Simukwayi with bestiality.
