Opposition United Party for National Development says it is shocking that Defence Minister Edgar Lungu is talking about the Patriotic Front government being willing to conduct a referendum when the ruling party is still holding on to the constitution.
UPND Kalomo Central Member of Parliament Request Muntanga said Lungu was not being sincere as the PF’s intransigence on the constitution making process was a well known fact.
Muntanga said the only reasonable thing for the PF to do was release the draft constitution before they could begin talking about steps which were further ahead.
He said Lungu had only given the assurance to calm the situation that has thrown the PF out of favour with the public.
Muntanga said Zambians should never relent in their demand for a people driven constitution.
Recently Defence Minister Edgar Lungu claimed that the PF was ready to go for a referendum if the Zambian people wanted it.
