THE Energy Regulation Board (ERB) has authorised state-power utility Zesco to increase power tariffs for all mining companies in the country by 28.8 per cent.
In June 2011, Zesco agreed that Copperbelt Energy Corporation (CEC), the sole power supplier to Copperbelt-based mining companies, increase power tariffs by 28 per cent.
However, some mining firms, disputed the upward adjustment and the matter was referred to ERB.
“After protracted consultations with all the parties involved, the ERB has arrived at a decision that the Bulk Supply Agreement tariffs between Zesco and CEC be adjusted to 6.84 US cents per kilowatt hour from the current average of 5.31 US cents per kilowatt hour,” ERB stated in an emailed announcement.
“This entails a rise in Bulk Supply Agreement tariff by 28.8 per cent and that other mines supplied directly by Zesco have to adjust upwards to the new minimum tariff of 6.84 US cents per kilowatt hour.”
