Chifuwe1Post Newspaper general manager Sheikh Chifuwe is among potential candidates being assessed to replace Anthony Mukwita as managing director/editor-in-chief at the Zambia Daily Mail.

According to information obtained by Zambia Reports, Chifuwe is favourite to take over the job at Longolongo Road as he is considered a friendly force to State House.

Chifuwe has a lengthy journalism career starting as a young photographer at The Post in the early 1990s where he has served in many capacities including as spokesperson for the political wing – The Press Freedom Committee of The Post.

The veteran also enjoys a good relationship with President Michael Sata who would be comfortable with Chifuwe at the helm of the public organisation.

Chifuwe is also a close ally of Fred M’membe and having him at the Zambia Daily Mail will strengthen the grip of their team in the media ahead of the 2016 polls.

However, there are concerns about Chifuwe’s tribe. He is Tonga and some PF officials are uncomfortable having him at the helm of the organisation because they fear opposition leader Hakainde Hichilema may gain some advantage in terms of coverage.

Having Chifuwe at the Zambia Daily Mail will mean two Tongas at the helm of two public institutions with Chibamba Kanyama at ZNBC. There are already concerns about Chibamba Kanyama for showing flexibility in allowing some prominent opposition leaders feature on the national broadcaster.
