Mulenga Sata has, as expected, gone through unopposed as Lusaka City Mayor. He takes over from Daniel Chisenga who served his full two terms.
He was imposed for the position by his father – President Michael Sata – following directives for no one to challenge the elections.
Mulenga, an ex-street dog trader, is slowly being earmarked for presidency in the ruling Patriotic Front.
ALthough it was a foregone conclusion the Kabulonga councillor will go through unopposed, the Patriotic Front public relations wing – The Post Newspaper – recently carried an article accusing the opposition of creating an impression that the President’s son was being prepared without a challenge.
He was also recently elected (unopposed) as Lusaka District chairman after his challenger was coerced into withdrawal at the last minute.
Meanwhile, Chawama Ward Two Councillor Potipher Tembo has been elected deputy mayor.
The PF, however, pulled last minute strings to try to decongest the stampede around the deputy mayor position that had been overcrowded following the directive to let Mulenga go unopposed at the top.
In Ndola Samuel Munthali and Richard Kalasa have been elected mayor and deputy respectively.
In Kabwe there was joy for the opposition as they got the deputy mayor position through MMD’s Jim Phiri while the PF’s Richard Bango was elected mayor.
There has been confusion where some councillors have defied party positions to support a single candidate. The MMD got both mayor and deputy position through Jealous Phiri and Penias Mushanga.
The ruling PF sprung to the position of deputy mayor in Livingstone with the UPND’s Milford Mambo winning the mayoral race.
