The following press release was issued by the NGOCC:
The Non Governmental Organisations Coordinating Council (NGOCC) is deeply concerned about the increased incidences of political violence being perpetrated by cadres of the ruling Patriotic Front (PF) party against opposition leaders.
The reports about the PF cadres attacking opposition leaders are of profound concern to the women’s movement. NGOCC was further alarmed to read that the UPND had decided to arm themselves in defence against attacks from the PF. We are happy however that the leadership of the UPND have directed their cadres against any form of violence or revenge. The initial position as reported in the media that they would arm themselves was a recipe for anarchy and lawlessness.
We urge all other leaders to denounce violence. In particular, we urge the President His Excellence Mr. Michael Sata, as the father of the nation to call upon PF cadres and all our young people to stop the violence they are perpetrating among the opposition and within their own party. It is totally, unacceptable that even after witnessing cadres brandishing all manner of weaponry no single arrest has been made. We call upon the police to decisively take action against perpetrators of this violence, as it is becoming a serious threat to the country’s peace.
Zambia has been known as an oasis of peace and we cannot therefore sit idle and watch the politicians compromise our hard-earned peace. It is a fact that any breakdown in law and order will affect the most vulnerable of our society – the women and children.
As the women’s movement, we are therefore keenly following and monitoring the political situation especially statements which our politicians are making. Henceforth therefore, we shall intensify the monitoring of media and public statements made. Need be NGOCC will also attend any public functions and gatherings of both the ruling and opposition parties to get first hand information.
As mothers, we shall not allow selfish and narrow partisan interests and the competition for power to compromise our peace.
As we commemorate Easter, we urge all Zambians to follow Christ’s teachings of love, forgiveness, and forbearance.
