Transport and Communication Minister Yamfwa Mukanga has backed Patriotic Front cadres’ threats to close down the Zambia Information and Communication Authority (ZICTA) offices for failing to close down critical online media.
Mukanga said the online media should know that their critical information was hurting the government and that there will be consequences.
He said the cadres’ threats were a reminder that cyber space should not be abused.
Mukanga said while he did not support the closure of ZICTA offices he sympathized with the cadres who wanted to close down the government institution to shut out the critical voice.
“The threat by PF youths to close down ZICTA is a reminder to the users of cyberspace that they should not use the internet to attack the government. What they write is very bad for the country and should be discouraged,” he said.
“Some people are taking advantage that their domain is not in this country to be traced so they use the internet maliciously to attack people.”
The Patriotic Front government has never hidden its loathe for the online media that has become the only conduit of alternative news to government propaganda that is milled through government papers and the now heavily compromised Post Newspapers.
