With rumours circulating regarding President Michael Sata’s fading health, a battle for succession is taking place within the ruling Patriotic Front (PF) as numerous members have begun aggressively campaigning.
The party’s Secretary General and Minister of Justice Wynter Kabimba has recently hit the campaign trail to raise his profile among the grassroots, making a major tour stop in Ndola yesterday – all while enjoying the luxuries usually only afforded to an elected head of state.
Mr. Kabimba arrived in in the Copperbelt capital around 1400 hours Zambian time amid tight security. He had traveled by road from Lusaka driven in a Toyota Landcruiser VX, Registration Number ALP 6280, and went straight to the Presidential Guest House along Kabelenga Road in the posh Ndola suburb of Kansenshi.
Witnesses noted that Kabimba was escorted on this trip by a security detail from State House – which is highly unusual for a person of his position.
Hundreds of people in a large motorcade awaited Kabimba just after Kafulafuta Weigh Bridge and escorted him to the Presidential Guest House in what seemed to be a show put up for an incoming President.
The Zambia Reports crew witnessed the entry of Kabimba into Ndola.
It is highly unusual for a Cabinet Minister to lodge at the Presidential Guest House which only reserved for the Republican President and his Vice. For Kabimba to be accommodated at the Presidential Guest House means that he has been cleared by State House, and is aiming to campaign as though he were an incumbent president, despite never having run nor won an election.
