nevers-mumba-mmd-nec-doraDuring a highly contentious meeting of the National Executive Council (NEC) of the Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD) held today at the Chrismar Hotel in Lusaka, the group resolved to strip NEC membership of Vice President Michael Kaingu, Vice President Brian Chituwo, as well as those of Lucky Mulusa, Dora Siliya, and Tobias Kafumukache.

The meeting comes just one day after the Lusaka High Court dismissed the contempt of court case against the former ruling party president Nevers Mumba, which had blocked him from convening the NEC. The reason for the dismissal of the contempt application was based on a technicality, that it was served on a Sunday.

The purging of NEC membership is seen as a victory for Mumba and Party Secretary Muhabi Lungu, who for many months have been battling for control of the party against the rebel group.

The dispute taking place within Zambia’s largest opposition party concerns factions of the party who believe that Nevers Mumba is failing to lead as party president, with numerous by-elections being lost and a general failure to raise campaign funds. On his behalf, Mumba has painted the rebellion as a PF conspiracy to cause confusion.

Some of the rebelling MMD members say that they are just trying to save the party and give it the best chance for victory in 2016 … which they believe is only possible under a different leader than Mumba.
